The Saginaw Community Foundation granted $93,717.97 this quarter to support 15 programs and projects in Saginaw County.
“We strive to grant funds to support programs that will truly make a difference in our communities,” said Reneé Johnston, president and CEO of the foundation. “Every person who has supported the foundation – whether through donations, volunteering or advocacy – has helped us give much needed support to area programs. It’s people like you who truly help make an impact in Saginaw and make our community a better place.”
Programs managed by a variety of organizations were supported, including the City of Saginaw Police Department, Carrollton Public Schools, Temple Theatre and Central Michigan University. Grants came from the Unrestricted Fund, as well as various Field-of-Interest funds, including the Senior Citizens Enrichment Fund and YWCA Fund for Women and Girls.
A $4,190 grant was awarded to the City of Saginaw Police Department for use in purchasing digital cameras to enhance the gathering of photographic evidence in abuse/neglect crimes against women, children, the elderly and vulnerable adults. The cameras will be used by first responders and detectives responsible for follow-up investigations in crimes of abuse and neglect.
Carrollton Public Schools was granted $10,000 to assist in the operation of the Carrollton Cavalier Teen Center. In partnership with the Boys and Girls Club and the United Way of Saginaw County, the 5-day a week program operates during the school year as an after school program and the summer to provide an education-based enrichment program serving approximately 175 students.
The Red Carpet Series and Classic Movie Series at the Temple Theatre each received grants of $5,000. A new venture for the 2013-14 season, the Red Carpet Series will feature five performances providing quality arts, culture and entertainment for all area residents.
The Classic Movie Series enters its 11th season by offering three classic movies with a lunch option. The movies presented are shown via their original film reel format in an effort to maintain the history and heritage of classic films.
The Central Michigan University College of Medicine was awarded a $20,000 grant to aide in the construction of two new facilities at St. Mary’s of Michigan and Covenant HealthCare. Between 120,000 and 130,000 square feet of clinical and educational space will be built to house the new CMU College of Medicine in Saginaw.
