Susan J. Sauer Hospitality and Sports Management Scholarship

Sue Sauer has been a resident of Freeland since 1980 – back when it was a small village of 4,000 residents. She and her husband Tim raised their three children as the population of Freeland grew to 14,000. There have been numerous community successes which has made Freeland the fastest growing community in Saginaw County. One of the most prominent is the Freeland SportsZone – a premier health and wellness facility with membership of over 4,000 individuals. A major part of the Freeland SportsZone’s success is its annual charity fundraiser, Arts in the Park. Sue was the lead on the creation of and success of this area event – which is now in its 12th year. For the event’s first 10 years, Sue served as its Chairperson. Her leadership of Arts in the Park is the reason why the Freeland SportsZone funds this scholarship and other scholarships. Sue’s success with Arts in the Park also funds community memberships for families that don’t have the means themselves. Additionally, this annual event helps provide equipment for children’s programs at the Freeland SportsZone. Sue’s hospitality skills at pulling together and organizing over 100 volunteers, artists, auctions, spirits, bands and food vendors has made Arts in the Park a major event in the heart of the Great Lakes Bay Region. More importantly, it has allowed yet another project to give back to the community in so many meaningful ways.
