During the summer of 2014, Saginaw-Shiawassee Habitat for Humanity held its annual Neighborhood Revitalization in four areas across Saginaw County: Buena Vista Township, Birch Run, Freeland and the City of Saginaw. A total of 67 homes benefiting nearly 100 families were repaired thanks to the help of 1,400 volunteers, including the entire staff of Saginaw Community Foundation at a site in Buena Vista.

 
A $12,000 grant awarded by SCF helped in part to fund a pool of funds from which loans are made to homeowners for the repairs performed by Habitat for Humanity volunteers. To qualify, a family of four must fall in a very low-income to moderately low-income bracket with combined household income in a range of $0-$44,400.

 
Zero interest loans of up to $7,500 can be obtained for repairs such as roofing and siding or even new furnaces and hot water heaters.

 
“This grant is a great grant as it will be able to be used over and over again,” said Carmen Mora, development director. “Families receiving the loans will pay the money back, allowing the granted funds to be used again in assisting with home repairs.”

 
Stabilizing neighborhoods is a key mission of the annual Neighborhood Revitalization’s. Once a neighborhood is identified for work, Habitat for
Humanity will continue to return each year until all projects are complete.
